Wow, this guy only had an 8 year run before it was retired? That seems not only a shame, but sort of a waste of equipment.

Several of these engines were destroyed in wrecks, and I think 2 in an engine house fire,but can't remember where, I think Vancouver WA.

The 302 and 311 burned in the Vancouver roundhouse fire. The 305 was destroyed in the head on collision at Paxton OR on the Oregon Trunk in 71 or 72 and I think this one (327) was on the train that got struck by those cars that rolled out of Bend. The accident took place at Deschutes OR and a huge fire ensued. Sadly 2 of the 3 men on the head end died. This class of locomotives werent very lucky.
