This locomotive was built in March 1945 (c/n 2003) as Alton E7 102 and became GM&O 102 after the 1947 merger. It was wrecked in August 1971 and scrapped. This is an example of a railroad modification to the EMD design air ventilation to the engine room. As built, there were unfiltered louvers behind the cab door above the letter G, plated over by the GM&O. In place of the louvers, the railroad cut three filtered openings above the word MOBILE in the car body to allow intake of combustion air. There is also an extra air intake grill at the top rear of the car body, not seen on the trailing E7. This was sometimes applied by railroads (also seen on CB&Q E7's) to allow intake of makeup air for the steam generators. |
