Milwaukee Rad F9's 93C and 94A at Elgin, Illinois on May 1, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Both locomotives are F9's, built for freight service on EMD Order 3172, the 93C was built in January 1954 as 83C (c/n 18754), later renumbered 93C, and later still renumbered to 126A, and it appears to have been retired in February 1975. Number 94A was also built in January 1954 (c/n 18755) as 84C, later renumbered 94A, later still renumbered 127A, and appears to have been retired in January 1978. In the early 1960's both units were equipped with Cummins HEP generators for suburban service. Interesting observation; I believe it is illegal to paint couplers nowdays, because it hides the cracks that might indicate failure. But it appears that the Milwaukee cared about the appearance of its locomotives, if only for a brief period of time. |
