Bryan Porter General I spent two days with the operator here throwing levers. Nice memories 5/30/2009 8:55:55 PM
Mitch Reed General I was just there with my better half today-probably my favorite railfanning spot. Ironically I was doing a bit of trackwalking & visualizing how things were when the tower & the EL still existed. THANKS for this pic Fred! 7/12/2009 9:56:32 PM
Ken Roble General Did CR operate this portion of the line prior to when the photo was taken? The west bound side looks pretty rusty 7/13/2009 11:09:59 PM
Fred Stuckmann General They did run a couple of trains a day for a brief time after the merger. I'm not sure of exact dates of discontinuence. In the Akron area thingswere quickly rearranged. By 1977 the EL yard was closed in favor of the Pennsy yard, as an example. 7/14/2009 7:44:52 AM
Howard Castellucio General After CR officials toured the EL it was almost unanimous that the El be downgraded, and abonded in favor of the PRR and NYC routes. These route were better logisticaly than the EL. And the El had defered matience for several yrs prior the the CR inclusion. By 1978 CR had pretty much disposed of the EL unfortunatly. Although sterling tower lasted for quite sometime because of the New York Dock agreements. Even without the EL crossing! 5/11/2010 7:33:03 PM
Fred Stuckmann General Thanks guys. 5/11/2010 7:54:08 PM
Ken Roble General Fred I have an 1982 Railfan & Railroad magazine that featured B&O's Chicago Jet, anyway the photographer took a photo of the B&O train at this interlocking and it said Conrail had removed the eastbound main's diamond and the other was 'spiked for the B&O'. What did that mean, that B&O was responsible for taking it out? 2/3/2014 12:02:55 AM
Fred Stuckmann General Conrail removed the diamond, they owned it. EL owned Sterling tower and the interlocking. 2/3/2014 8:31:26 AM
