SP GP40-2 7954, Tucson, Arizona, November 21, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in May 1980 (c/n 796354-15), and was one of 28 mother units (GP40-2's and GP40R's) equipped to transfer power to trailing TEBU units, one of which (#1609) is seen here. The TEBU's were former U25B's with the prime movers removed, but retaining traction motors, fuel tanks, and dynamic brakes. The TEBU was equipped with pumps and sensors to sense fuel loads on the mother units and pump fuel from the TEBU tank to keep all locomotives balanced. On the left is GP40-2 7620, having suffered some wreck damage and awaiting repairs. |
