On 11 January 1984 the South African Railways inaugurated the MetroBlitz, a high speed commuter service between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Five Class 12E electric locomotives were built in 1983 especially for this service, numbered in the range from 12-001 to 12-005. It was designed and built by Union Carriage and Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). The Class 12E is a modified single cab version of the Class 6E1 with a conductor’s cabin at the rear end. The locomotive has the same power output as a Class 6E1, but has a higher gear ratio to enable it to run at a safe maximum speed of 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour).
