KCS GP40 788
Kansas City Southern GP40 788 was on train No. 53 as it was heading east across New Orleans over the Norfolk Southern, on its way from the KCS to the Seaboard System’s GENTILLY YARD. The 788 had been built in February 1967 as Illinois Central 3052 (EMD 32872) and was acquired by the KCS in April 1982, after its initial 15-year lease expired. KCS sent it to Morrison- Knudsen’s BOISE LOCOMOTIVE SHOP in January 1994 as partial payment for upgrading 16 GP40M-2’s into GP40’s 4780-4795, and it was scrapped at the Boise Locomotive Shop in June 1996.
