Missouri Pacific GP38-2 2136 switches the Diamond Crystal Salt Co. mine on the shore of Lake Peigneur, south of New Iberia. On 20 November 1980, a Texaco drill working in the lake punctured the mine, flooding it. When this photo was taken, operations at the salt mine were just about over. Less than a month later, the Interstate Commerce Commission approved the abandonment of the MP's line from Port Barre through New Iberia to Jefferson Island. Since 1994 AGL Resources has been using the underlying salt dome as a a storage and hub facility for pressurized natural gas. |
