CSS&SB 2 at Michigan City, Indiana on an unknown day in May 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 2 was built by Pullman Car and Manufacturing Company in 1926, one of ten of the first steel cars ordered by the Insull administration (road #'s 1 - 9). They were also the first cars to operate on 1500 volts DC. When first placed in service on July 13, 1926, they operated between Michigan City and South Bend until the rest of the railroad was converted from 6000 volts AC. This car is the original 60 foot length, rides on Baldwin 84-60AA trucks equipped with Westinghouse 4W567-C11 traction motors, weighs 133,400 pounds, and seats 56 passengers (16 in the smoking section). |
