Louisville & Nashville Railroad SW7 2258 at Nashville, Tennessee on August 24, 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was shot from the Melrose Avenue overpass at the north end of Radnor Yard and its clear that everyone is paying attention to the job. Number 2258 is in charge of a train of three flatcars. The one in the middle is loaded with worn brake shoes picked up earlier from various points in the yard. The flatcars at either end are loaded with new brake shoes and have chutes attached to the sides. The gentlemen on the end flatcars will toss new shoes into the chutes where they will be deposited near the rails. Car knockers will use the new shoes to replace worn shoes on arriving and departing freight cars. I THINK that the two end flatcars were loaded with different types of brake shoes, either composite or cast steel. |
