The "White Train" (also called "The Atomic Train" and "The Nuclear Train") was reportedly used to transport nuclear weapons from around the country to the Department of Energy's secure facility in Pantex, Texas (near Amarillo). The train consisted of "Escort" cars at each end with power cars and weapon transport cars and were usually nine cars in length. Later on, after a series of demonstrations by opponents of nuclear weapons and technology, the "White Train" individual cars were painted in various colors in an attempt to lower attention to the train. However, crews continued to refer to the train by all its previous nicknames. The entire consist of this train has been retired and is at a museum in Texas. |
