Amtrak 1293 was built by the St. Louis Car Co. as U.S. Army kitchen car 89661. It was one of 89 such cars (89600-89688) built under Lot. 1773 in 1953. Fifty of these cars were transferred to Amtrak in 1973, where most of them became 1300- and 1350-series baggage cars. This car became AMTK 1305 in 1973, but was rebuilt into power car 1293 in 1975 and was renumbered 687 in 1977. It was one of six former kitchen/baggage cars rebuilt into power cars which enabled locomotives without head-end power to haul Amfleet cars until enough HEP engines were available. |
