Were these tracks lowered so roads can go over? Kind of a strange place for a depot.

This Southern Railway depot was built in 1907. At that time, the tracks were at grade with the depot. The tracks through High Point were lowered into this cut in the late 1930's in order to eliminate several downtown railroad crossings. This depot -- which is practically in the dead center of town -- underwent an extensive, multi-million dollar renovation and was reopened last year. Details on this and other NC projects at NCDOT Rail Division web page!
