Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-2 Class S-2 2912 at an unknown location on an unknown date, photo by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chuck Zeiler collection. Once upon a time you could purchase steam locomotive prints from a gentleman named Herbert L. Broadbelt. This was one of those photos, an unusual action photo in the Baldwin Locomotive Works negative collection (note the negative number in the lower right). It was undated and no location was noted. I roughed in Denver as the location because it looks like a major terminal, but does not look like Chicago. It could be Galesburg, Burlington, Omaha, or Kansas City, I don't know. Leave a comment if you know better. The date is also roughed in based on the build date (1910, c/n 34589), all steel cars pictured, a photo in the book, Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route, which shows this locomotive in 1933 with a different (Sunbeam, I believe) headlight in commuter service. Number 2912 was not rebuilt, but was retired in June 1935. It was one of fifty S-2's built by Baldwin for the CB&Q, assigned road numbers 2900-2949. |
