Among Australia's oddest locomotives is a group of former Danish State RR MZ-class units. 16 of the early-70s units were brought into the country in 2007-08 and are operated by the Independent Railways of Australia. 14 survive and work in New South Wales where railfans have taken to calling them "Helgas". Not so odd are their internals, which are very similar to EMD's SD45; with 20-cylinder 3600HP 645 power plants. 1434 is shown here sitting by the depot at Goulburn. |
