In 1982, Los Angeles experimented with commuter trains between downtown and Oxnard, in nearby Ventura County. Is was underfunded and poorly executed and, with average daily ridership of just 130 commuters per day, lasted only five months. On the evening of December 2, 1982, train #101 (Los Angeles to Oxnard) departs Union Station with leased Cal Train equipment - SP GP9R 3834 (ex-SP 3707, nee-SP 5844) with a full light package, and a pair of ex-SP gallery coaches (the second io full Cal Train colors). In 1992, a vastly improved commuter system, Metrolink, began service, which continues to this day. |
