The "Big E" appears to have been hastily applied. Notice too, that there is no mu capability at this end.

Yes, and the side lettering looks improvised too...great rare sight.

The side lettering was very much improvised. There were many cab units that got that treatment in that period. The nose heralds were also improvised as well, the new "EL" pasted over the old ERIE herald. This was the way it was done til the C 424's were delivered in 1963, in a scheme that was virtually identical to this one, except for the wings. The gray/maroon/yellow scheme adapted from the DLW came into use following that, after William White became EL president. I don't recall now if the U25's or C 425's got it first.
