I started taking steam photographs in 1954 so I was about two years too late to get a shot of regular NH steam activity. Nevertheless, NH J-1 2-8-2 3020 was held in reserve in Providence not too far from home. The Mikado was retained to furnish steam to a snow clearer which used a conveyor to lift snow into a tank where the snow was melted with steam. The last and only time 3020 was fired-up to melt snow was during the March 20, 1956 blizzard in Providence. I saw her in steam that night at the Charles Street engine terminal but by the time I arrived the next day the fire was dead and 3020 was growing cold. She was scrapped about 2 1/2 years later.. |
