MKT 3109 Editors Pick!
OKARCHE OK Jan 17 1983 -- Katy 3109 and GP40 171 are switching cars at a bulk loading facility. This was the Rock Islands north-south line which Katy took over and operated a the Missouri Kansas Texas. EMD built the 3109 (s/n 34286) For Penn Central as PC 3109 in August 1968 and later became Conrail 3109. Katy acquired it after the Conrail lease expired and renumbered it MKT 235. This photo shows the unit patched for MKT but not yet renumbered. When Union Pacific took over it became UP 670 on May 19 1990 and was to be renumbered UP 9953 to free up the number for a GP38-2. UP retired the 670 on April 18 2000. It was photographed by Brandon Warnick in Paducah KY on Oct 1 2011 and was reported by Mark Gillings as en route to Progress Rail in Tacoma WA on March 24 2012.
