On December 30, 1985, the City of Cookeville received an L&N caboose from Seaboard Systems Railroad. This rail company ran freight through the area from 1968 into the early 70’s. The caboose we have from them is relatively small in size, since crews no longer lived aboard during freight runs. This caboose was built in the 1950’s and was retired from rail service in early 1980. The interior of the caboose, with its kerosene stove, is similar to how it looked when it was last used. It also houses our tool exhibit, “Working on the Railroad: The Right Tool for the Right Job.” This caboose is known as a Bay Window Type. |
