If I'm keeping my geography properly aligned this is just east of MP B-9. The hi-rail is crossing a large bog. The RR had problems for years with the track settling here. The original RR was built on a corduroy foundation of logs sunk into the bog then covered with ballast. The logs are still there and as long as they stay underwater they'll remain solid. The settling problem was solved by removing the old cinder ballast and placing 12 foot ties over crushed stone ballast. The RR did this work itself with a 40 man work crew about 1970. /DL |
