Linde produced liquid argon used in the welding industries as well as liquid nitrogen and oxygen. I worked for Linde and this was the only exposed tankcar that I had ever seen. The majority of their tanks were mounted in boxcars that shielded the tanks from exposure to the sun which in turned would vaporize the liquids in the tanks due to the solar heating effect. The tanks would "smoke" causing concern by those not aware of the process to think something was wrong. As pressure builds up on the car a vent is provided to safely release excess pressure to the atmosphere. In this image you can clearly see and approximate 1.5 inch pipe routed upward coming from the control cabinet on the side of the tankcar. |
