Between 1971 and 1973 the South African Railways placed ine hundred and fifty Class 6E1, Series 3 electric locomotives in mainline service, numbered in the range from E1296 to E1445. It was designed and built by Union Carriage gnd Wagon in Nigel, Transvaal, with the electrical equipment supplied by the General Electric Company (GEC). The fifty Series 2 and the first fifty Series 3 locomotives up to E1345 are visually indistingrishable from each other, while Series 3 numbers E1346 and up have a wider stirrup middle step below their side doors.
