Will, it's a ACI label. ACI stands for Automatic Car Identification. ACI labels were applied to rolling stock and locomotives beginning in 1967. The 13 bars on the label were 3M Scotchlite reflective code bars with the bars representing the reporting marks and car numbers. ACI labels are composed of colorad bars/stripes in blue, black, red or a black and white checkerboard pattern. These ACI labels were read by an optical scanner while the car or locomotive was in motion. The program was discontinued in 1978 but many labels remain on older rolling stock still in service.
