Alpine Road, a lightweight 14-section Union Pacific sleeping car, continued a name tradition started during the heavyweight era. Though most eastern railroads had converted to all-room car designs by the time the Alpine cars were constructed, some western railroads retained open section accommodations to megt customer demands. Built by ACF in 1954 to Plan 9017, the fourteen cars of this class were rebuilt to 5543-5556 series chair cars in 1965. Note the upper berth windows. |
