SOU GP38-2 5016
Southern Railway GP38-2 5016 at about 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on March 7, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of the last photographs I shot in the Chicago area. I was moving to Arkansas, after about 40 years of living in Chicago and suburbs, to take care of my recently widowed mother. Another impedus for moving was that I had recently been outplaced by my employer when the company was purchased by another and the Chicago offices were closed. I was running around Chicago shooting photos at some of the locations I have been to in the 1960's and this was one of them. I was approached by a security officer and I explained my presence. He responded by pulling a gun and sternly advising me to depart posthaste (his exact words were, shall we say, quite colorful). I complied and later learned that this location had been the site of several boxcar break-in's and burglaries. To paraphrase Bob Dylan, the times they were a-changin'.

Phil S General Thanks for "taking one for the team" Chuck. LOL. I also spent many hours at this location around this time frame. Always hoped to see my favorite RR GT make a delivery to the N&W here but sadly it never happened. I also ran into a couple of Conrail Special Agents and they either gave me the stinky eye or told me to "watch my back" around here. You couldn't catch me around here now even if I had Navy Team Seal 6 with me. 9/30/2013 10:24:32 AM
Chuck Zeiler General On the other hand, after my arrival in Arkansas, I scouted the local railroad scene. There (in Cotter) in met several crew members and became acquainted with them on a first name basis. This resulted in a few cab and caboose rides as well as a few boat rides (one of the Engineer's owned a deep sea fishing trawler which he had disassembled and trucked to the local lake). So I'm not complaining, the NS gave me an appreciation for my new home. 10/1/2013 10:59:32 AM
