BM 4-4-0 #1001 - Boston & Maine  Contributor's Pick!
The Manchester Locomotive Works built this American style locomotive sometime between 1900-11. It was an A-41 class unit with 69" drivers and 190 psi boiler pressure. No date was listed so it's a "guess-timation". Thanks to Stu Nicholson and espeically David Hutchinson, the location has been identified as the East Somersville roundhouse near Sullivan Square. Stu Nicholson General Possible that this could be either the Boston Engine Terminal or the North Billerica Shops. My grandmother's father and brothers all worked at the Billerica Shops, one of them rising to Shop Foreman. That was my (Grand0 Uncle Benny Knowles, who took my Dad and I on a tour of the shops when they were still active. I remember seeing some old steamers on the deadline. 10/29/2013 8:27:21 PM
Alan Fricker General Gary, that appears to be a negative number in the lower right hand corner. Either he had a meticulous filing system, or could he have taken this photo for the railroad? I guess we'll never know. 10/29/2013 8:32:09 PM
David Hutchinson General This photo was taken at the old East Somerville roundhouse, located down around Sullivan Square 10/30/2013 7:37:13 PM
