L P General Now there is something you do not see in this era. None of the windows have plates welded on them. From what I heard, FRR glazing was so expensive, railroads just blanked off unneeded windows. 5/19/2014 9:55:15 AM
Chuck Zeiler General I believe you are correct about the FRA glazing. I looked up the FRA regulations and there is an exception as follows: Except for yard cabooses and cabooses equipped as described in paragraphs (a) and (b), cabooses built or rebuilt prior to July 1, 1980, shall be equipped with certified glazing in all windows after June 30, 1984. Paragraphs (a) and (b) mention cabooses, other than yard cabooses, built or rebuilt prior to July 1, 1980, are not required to replace the glazing in forward and rearward (Paragraph a) and side (Paragraph b) windows until shopping or breakage of the existing window glazing. http://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?rgn=div5&node=49:4.1.1.1.18 5/19/2014 10:36:17 AM
L P General Interesting! I wonder if the caboose falls into that grey area based on your date taken. I also wonder is "IN ASSIGNED SERVICE" like "yard" in this case. 5/19/2014 2:57:30 PM
