SP 4-10-2 #5045 - Southern Pacific  Contributor's Pick!
This 1927 Alco-Schenectady built "Overland-type" (or better known as "Southern Pacific-type") locomotive sits in an unidentified yard, possibly Roseville, CA, awaiting its next orders. Specifics - SP-3 class, 63.5" drivers, oil burner, generated a boiler pressure of 225 psi for its three sets of cylinders, an engine weight of 445,000 lb and produced a tractive effort of 86,589 lb. According to several resources, the locomotive was an excellent performer at speeds between 30-35 mph but suffered maintenance problems at higher speeds and too rigid to perform well on the sinuous curves of Donner pass, but excelled on the Sunset Route east of LA. Date and location are approximations. No photogrpaher listed.
