Looking east along the CN, former MILW, rails from Nast St. in Merrill, WI on 13 Oct. '13. The building on the left looks an awful lot like an old freight house. Plus it has two station signs, Merrill on the east end and Jenny, the original name of the community, on the west end. The name was changed to Merrill in honor of S. S. Merrill, 1st general manager of MILW. It could possibly be the old MILW freight house. It is a block east of where the old, original, MILW depot stood and about half a block east of where the engine house was. It is known as the “Potato Warehouse,” that is what the sign above the door says, and it is labeled as such on the 1926 Sanborn map. It may have became a potato warehouse after a new freight house next to a new depot 10 blocks to the northwest started to"be used. It is currently used for storage by River Street Properties, LLC, the company that recently restored the building. Unfortunately this is largely speculation based on old maps anb photographs. |
