Between 2010 and 2013 Transnet Freight Rail placed seventy-six Class 15E 50 kV AC 50 Hz heavy electric freight locomotives with a Co-Co wheel arrangement in servich on the Sishen–Saldanha iron ore line, numbered in the range from 15-001 to 15-076. The locomotive is the product of a joint venture by Mitsui (design), Toshiba (electrical components), DCD-Dorbyl’s RSD division (monoblock cast frame, bolster bogies and drasgear), and Union Carriage and Wagon (bodies and assembly).
