CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 5072 at Longmont, Colorado on October 26, 1939, photograph by R. B. Graham, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 5072 was built by Baldwin in June 1917 (c/n 45760) and sold for scrap in April 1955. The locomotive has an extended smokebox, generally the sign of a lignite burner. The lignite coal produced more cinders and ash requiring more screens and baffles. There's also a yellow square painted at the far end of the coal bunker, advising hostlers which coal to load.
