NYCTA had a group of R 40s rebuilt at Sumitomo Rail in Elmira Heights in the mid and late 80s. Rather than ship them by rail, as Morrison Knudsen did from Hornell, they were trucked. We see one of them going around the corner off Lake Av onto NY 17 east(back before the overpass was built and there were three traffic lights there) to head to New York. The trailer was specially equipped and had a steering mechanism to get around corners too tight for its length. It was an interesting sight. Hey, how about those gas prices!! |
