Here is another nice example of a Hoosier J-1 class Mikado built by Alco-Brooks in August of 1912 sitting in the Michigan City Monon yard. With the push for total dieselization, the Monon started retiring this class in 1939 and with Eric Reinert's help (see comment below), this particular loco lasted until February 26,1948 and was sold for scrap in Apriul of 1948. Specifics - 63" drivers, 170 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinder, engine weight of 286,000 lb, tractive effort of 53,947 lb. The exact day in September, 1937 was not given. Unknown photographer |
