An eastbound Burlington Northern freight, led by a quartet of SD40-2s, makes crew change in McCook, Nebraska, on August 20th, 1987. McCook, in southwestern Nebraska, is the division point where the Colorado Division meets the Nebraska Division, and it is also where the time changes from Central Time to Mountain Time (on the railroad - the actual time zone border is roughly 50 miles further west). The large, brick station was constructed by the Chicago Burlington & Quincy in 1925 (replacing a station built in 1882) and, once a stop for the famed "California Zephyr," remains a stop for Amtraks "California Zephyr.". |
