CIL 4-8-0 #225 - Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville (Monon)  Contributor's Pick!
Not sure how the 4-8-0 wheel configuration was ever named "Mastodon" with such small (54") driver "legs." This one, built by Alco-Brooks in April of 1898 originally as CIOL #205 but renumbered in 1926 as CIL 225 after a rebuild. It served the Monon for nearly 48 years before succumbing to the scrapper's torch when sold for scrap on2/6/1947. Rebuilt specs - class E-1, 54" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, original engine weight of!172,000 lb, original tractive effort of 36,097 lb, rebuilt and superheated by the Monon shops in 1922. The class was retired between 1946-49. unknown photographer
