PRR 9845, Fairmont, 1964
MofW Equipment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad Maintenance-of-Way Equipment in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 08 August 1964. On the left is PRR Fairmont "Flame Thrower" #9845. This machine has at least two functions, depending upon the season. In the winter, it is used to melt snow and ice that might foul switches. In the summer, it is used to burn track-side weeds. On the right are two tank cars (carrying water) and PRR Motor Car #7715. These would follow the "flame thrower" (pictured at left), and a worker would spray water on any weeds that were still burning. Photo taken at the intersection of South Juniata and Blair Streets, adjacent to the PRR's Freight Station.
