ERIE 4-6-2 #2931  Contributor's Pick!
Nice action shot of Erie Pacific #2931 stopped at the passenger station in Hammond, IN. As a Hoosier, I'm always happy to post an Indiana related photo like this one! This is now a 16 mile Erie Lackawanna bicycle path starting near Crown Point and ending in downtown Hammond near this location. If you look carefully, you can see 3 watchtowers in a row down the track. Twenty of these "USRA heavy"-units were built by Baldwin and Alco-Richmond in 1919 for the Erie RR. All lasted into the early 1950's. Specifics - K5 class, 79" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 27x28" cylimders, engine weight of 306,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,925 lb. Lamar M. Kelley photo

Eric Reinert General I also find the extra set of tracks in the pavement interesting. Wonder what it was for, and how long ago it was used. 8/4/2020 4:44:33 PM
