PRR 4896, GG-1, 1965
WIL-ALT-65. Here is an original photo that I took while riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train from Harrisburg to Altoona during August of 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #4896 and #4880. Both are GG-1's built in Juniata; #4896 was built during April of 1940, but #4880 was built during February of 1939. Tjey are parked on the Locomotive Ready Tracks just West of the Harrisburg Passenger Station, awaiting the call for their next runs eastward. Also visible on the right is PRR #999;00, a former steam locomotive tender that has been relegated to Maintenance-of-Way service. Instead of supplying a steam locomotive with water, it's now filled with fuel oil to replenish the steam-heat boilers in GG-1 electrics.
