Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-4 24815 at Cicero, Illinois on July 14, 1983, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q built 100 Class XML-4 boxcars in number series 24800 -24899 at Havelock, Nebraska in 1965, equipped with Keystone cushion underframes and Evans DF Loader Equipment. They had 10 foot door openings and a 4,974 cubic foot capacity. Note the wheel skate ( yellow device ) to the right of the first wheel. These were placed on the track to prevent the cars rolling off the hump from running off the yard tracks and fouling the switching leads. The idea was that if a car had too much momentum coming off the hump, it would ride up on the skate and slide to a stop, not only preventing the fouling but also flat wheels from the sliding. |
