CIL 4-8-0 #229 - Chicago, Indpls & Louisville (Monon)  Contributor's Pick!
An unknown photographer caught the engineer with his 1900 Brooks build 4-8-0 "Mastodon" steam loco posing in an unknown location in Indiana. Specs - E1 class, 54" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x26" cylinders, engine weight of 172,000 lb, tractive effort of 36,097 lb. The class was retired between 1946-49 - this loco was retired on 6/20/1949. The photo appears to be a very old print (or reprint), not a newer one. The date is approximate.

Jim Ford General This wheel arrangement and the 2-6-0 seemed to fall out of favor early in the 20th century. I wonder why. 1/7/2017 12:02:49 PM
