This was a view looking north along the Wax Lake Outlet, from the Southern Pacific and U.S. Highway 90 bridges towards the Atchafalaya Basin in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. The other structures in the photos were aerial pipeline crossings. The 13-mile channel - also known as the Calumet Cut – was completed in 1942 to provide an additional outlet from the Atchafalaya Basin to the Gulf of Mexico. The railroad bridge consists of three 400-foot thru riveted truss spans, with a 70-foot deck plate girder at each end. It is located on the SUNSET ROUTE near milepost 91, about 11#miles west of Morgan City, Louisiana. |
