Colorado & Southern Railway auxiliary tender 99518 at Oregon, Illinois on June 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was a fantrip from Eola to Oregon and return, featuring 2-8-2 4960 working the Oregon Way Freight. About ten miles east of Oregon was a wye at Flagg Center, where the locomotive was turned for the return trip to Chicago. For the ten miles or so between Flagg Center and Oregon, the trailing combine number 3003, which also served as the regular coach/caboose on the Oregon Way Freight, was coupled next to 4960's smokebox. This resulted in a very crowded vestibule on 3003, with fans literally hanging on. Although the CB&Q had provided a couple of safety officials to control the fans, but they could not get on to the vestibule to shoo us off. I believe that is the way freight's regular Conductor seen on 99518 leading 4960 in the run around move, and he was none too pleased with the situation and the general pilfering his office ( 3003 ) received from the fans. |
