A look generally west down the main line from the West 2nd Street grade crossing. The layout of the yard has changed some since the Chicago and Northwestern era. The Fox River Valley Railroad operated here briefly in the early 1990's until being purchased by the modern Wisconsin Central. There is a wye here yet, a connection with the Shawano Sub (formerly part of the Soo Line and modern Wisconsin Central. The Line heading down off to the left is the Kimberly Sub, which once reached as far as Kaukauna South. It now ends in Combined Locks at the Appleton Coated paper mill. Traffic to Appleton Coated is now in jeopardy due to financial struggles of the mill. Hopefully, judging by the number of cars seen here, there is still enough traffic on the Kimberly sub and the Appleton area to keep things going. There is also a branch from here to serve New London. |
