Caught just a few years before the final absorption into the UP system, this Mopac caboose hangs at the end of a string of cars. According to a trainweb page, MoPac built all of the platform-type, short bay-window cabooses itself. Both the MP's Desoto and Sedalia shops combined to assemble each car. Starting in 1977, MoPac shops built 350 cars over the next six years (MP #13715-13814, 13815-13965 & 13000-13099) None of the short bay window cabs were ever assigned to transfer service, a common assumption. The Shortys were all true Road cabooses and all were assigned as such in the 13000-series. By the 1980's, they were seen all over the system. Current display location is either Chamblee, GA or most probably, Fairfield, IA. M.G. Lovis slide |
