CN local pauses next to the station sign while working in the former SOO yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 13 Oct. '17. The depot stood a few blocks to the east, on a long spur that from the main line and along W. College Ave. into downtown Appleton. The depot was razed in 1970 and the spur was pulled up a decade or two after that (although the spur is still depicted on CN's interactive system map). Local was servicing Presto Products, partially visible at left. Founded in 1961, it is currently possessed by the Rank Group. Previous owners include the Coca-Cola Co., the Reynolds Metals Co., and Alcoa Inc. The facility at right has two indoor spurs, but the turnout leading to them has been gone for quite a while. Most of the large facility seems idle, but some portions of it appear to used by someone. The main line forms the border between the Town of Grand Chute and the City of Appleton for this portion of that often convoluted border. |
