PRR 9694, EH-15, 1953
BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken just East of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 August 1953. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9694 and two more "EH" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9694 is an EH-15 built in April of 1949, and later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A. Given the presence of N-8 caboose #478150, they are pushing a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin where they will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another run up "The Mountain."
