Partial Caption: "By-product of a dream that never materialized, 'Big Liz' was the Pennsylvania's first catenary-fed road locomotive. Contemplating electrification of the heavy grades west of Altoona, the line built this experimental freight motor in 1917." Shown here is PRR engine #3931, an FF-1 (1-C-C-1) built in Juniata during April of 1917, rated at 4,000 horsepower, and retired in April of 1940 after 23 years of faithful service. |
