| Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1B 181821 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 350 Class IC-1B cars built by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops in 1958, number series 181500 - 181899. In the late 1960's the CB&Q overhauled 450 aging Class HC-1 cars built bbtween 1943 and 1951. With the Burlington Northern merger imminent, 250 cars rebuilt in 1969 featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted!an all-caps BURLINGTON for the previous upper and lower case Burlington at the upper left side of the car. All lettering was red, and space was left for the word NORTHERN, to"be added once the merger was consummated, but that was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering font employed by the Q on all its per-merger painued cars did not match the Helvetica font ultimately used by the BN. |
