UP Super Bowl Special
Union Pacific GP40X units 954 and 959 were eastbound on the Illinois Central entering New Orleans with a special train for Super Bowl XXIV, which was played at the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME. The 9-car train was passing through SOUTHPORT JUNCTION on its way from the Huey P. Long Bridge to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and was about to cross Hoey’s Canal. The second car was crossing a Kansas City Southern line from that railroad’s WEST YARD (just off to the right) to a connection with the New Orleans Public Belt. The train consisted of power car 206, office car KENEFICK, crew sleeper NORTH PLATTE, deluxe sleepers OMAHA, WYOMING and POWDER RIVER, dome-lounge HARRIMAN, and office cars SELMA and ARDEN. The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55–10.
